  RED FRIDAYS
A campaign to show support for our Canadian Military is fast becoming
a popular Friday event with everyone out and about sporting as much red as they can.
Why?  Because it's easy to do, doesn't cost anything and is so powerful in itself.

The color red was chosen to represent the blood that has been shed for our freedom.

Fridays seemed an appropriate day to acknowledge our support since many companies have relaxes in dress rules on Fridays.

During these troubled times worldwide, many Canadian feel helpless, they want to support our troops but are not sure how.  Well, wearing red on Fridays is a very visible, tangible way to acknowledge the sacrifices of not only our troops but also their families.

Please join in this wonderful campaign and let's see Canada turn red from coast to coast.

Local 483 - WorkPlace and Safety Insurance Board – Committee Rep. needed

The Executive is looking for someone to serve Local 483 in this very important and sometimes time consuming role.
The Union is looking for someone that is interested in learning the rules and regulations surrounding WSIB, including how forms work and to be able to help explain how WSIB benefits work for local 483 members.
Since the institution of this committee in 2000, it has become increasingly busy with many members coming forward for information.
Very important to know ahead of time, is that the person who wishes to take this position, be made aware that short notice meetings with members are sometimes unavoidable.
If at all possible, the committee member needs to be available when an injured member needs help understanding issues.
Injured members need to also understand that the committee's best efforts will be made so that a meeting can be held.
Membership must also understand that the committee is set up to provide information, and work on your behalf only if you desire.
The new committeeperson will be counted on by the entire membership of Local 483 to do a good job.
Todd DesChamps
is currently the contact person for this committee. The new member will work with Todd to ensure that there is a continuation of excellent work.
Members interested should contact a member of the Executive. There has been no timetable set to select a new committee member.

L
ocal 483’s contributions to a worthy member and his family

Local 483 urged all members to come together in a time of need for one of our members.
Dave Merkley, Glucose Solids Packerman, along with his wife Terra and their close family dealt with some difficult times over the past year. As a new born, their son Nicholas spent weeks in hospital following his birth, that was followed by another lengthy stay only a few short months later.
With cards circulating the plant, members signed them in support of Nicholas’ speedy recovery and also gave generously to help cover some of the families growing expenses, which included; travel, lodging, meals, and time away from work.
Dave was recently presented with the cards along with over $1,000.00 that had been donated.
This generosity was needed and will never be forgotten.

Congratulations everyone!

Christmas Shopping

Local 483, along with the CAW, the Canadian Labour Congress and many other Union ’s are promoting responsible and ethical shopping practices for ourselves and other consumers this holiday season.

Earlier this year a number of high-profile cases surfaced regarding the production and subsequent recall of toys that pose serious health risks to children in Canada .

The CLC has released an information leaflet that highlights many of the toys that Canadians will purchase over the next month that are manufactured in countries with poorly enforced labour laws and inadequate health and safety standards.

Local 483 is encouraging families to purchase clothing and other products that are made in Canada .

Bill C-257 Vote lost in House of Commons

Labour lost their battle to establish a ban on the use of replacement workers during strikes and lockouts in the federal sector. Third and final reading on Bill C-257 was held Wednesday evening (March 21st) in the House of Commons. The final vote tally was 122 in favour and 177 opposed.
The results were disappointing considering on October 25, 2006, the Bill passed second reading by a margin of 167 for and 121 against.
As was the case of second reading, the Bill, which was introduced as a Private Members Bill by the Bloc Québécois, was fully supported by the Bloc and NDP in third reading.
Twenty-one Conservatives, including Leeds-Grenville MP Gord Brown, supported Bill C-257 in second reading - whereas only one Conservative stood in support at final reading - Essex MP Jeff Watson.
The Liberals, who overwhelming supported the Bill last time, also flip-flopped on third reading.  Notable Liberals including Leader Stéphan Dion, Bill Graham, Michael Ignatieff, Ken Dryden, Joe Volpe, Ralph Goodale, Judy Sgro, Scott Brisson, Karen Redmond, Carolyn Bennett, Anita Neville and Liberal Labour critic Mario Silva all stood opposing the Bill at final reading - when it really counted - despite their voting in favor of the legislation in October.

Anti-Scab Legislation Needs Your Help!

In little more than a week, Parliament is scheduled to vote on legislation that would put an end to the use of scabs during labour disputes in the federal sector. Working people must ensure that this happens.

Recently, the leader of the Liberal party, Stéphane Dion, announced that he will not support an end to scab labour – even though the majority of his
Liberal colleagues supported the first and second readings of the legislation in Parliament. This means that we must work harder than ever to convince
our MPs that the use of scabs is behaviour that Canadian workers cannot accept.

When Bill C-257 comes to a vote, we want our MPs to vote ‘yes.’ You can tell Stéphane Dion and your own MP to vote ‘yes’ by visiting the CAW web site at: www.caw.ca/index.asp.

This will take only a few minutes of your time. Be sure to make this important commitment to solidarity as soon as possible.

Anti-Scab Legislation Passes Second Reading
Anti-scab legislation is one step closer to passage in the House of Commons.

On Wednesday October 25th MP's voted 167 to 101 on a bill that bans the use of replacement workers during strikes at federally regulated workplaces.

In a second-reading vote, the bill received unanimous support from the NDP and Bloc Quebecois, it also received major support from the Liberals as almost all Liberal MP’s voted for it, there were also a few brave Conservatives, who realize that fairness needs to be incorporated into the Canada Labour Code, and supported the Bill.
Most Conservatives including Prime Minister Stephen Harper opposed it.

Bill C-257 would revise the Canada Labour Code, and impose maximum $1,000-a-day fines on employers who use so-called "scab" labour.

MP’s (other than Conservatives) that voted against Bill C-257

(Hon) Roy Cullen [Etobicoke North]  LIB.

Mark Holland [ Ajax Pickering ] LIB.

Derek Lee [Scarborough – Rouge River ] LIB.

David McGuinty [ Ottawa South] LIB. (Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty’s Brother)

(Hon) Karen Redman [ Kitchener Centre] LIB.

(Hon) Raymond Simard [Saint Boniface] LIB. Manitoba

Paul Szabo [ Mississauga South] LIB.

(Hon) Dan Teague [ Pickering Scarborough East] LIB.

(Hon) Garth Turner [Halton] INDP.

Leeds-Grenville MP Gord Brown (Conservative) voted in favour of Bill C-257.

Stormont-Dundas-Glengarry MP Guy Lauzon (Conservative) voted against it.

Thanks to those Local 483 members who wrote in and asked your MP to support this Bill. Please take the time to write them again.

A successful third and final reading vote in the House of Commons is now needed.  There will be three votes in the Senate and then royal assent before the bill can become law.

SUPPORTING BILL C-257

Our Members of Parliament will soon be asked (this month) to vote on Bill C-257.

The bill, if passed, will ban the use of replacement workers (scabs) during labour disputes.

In provinces where labour laws have been improved to outlaw scab labour, immediate decreases in the amount of work time lost to labour disputes has been achieved.

All provinces should have this same fair law.

Letters to our Local MP’s, in Leeds and Grenville and Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry, are available from your Union urging them to support and vote for this important Bill.

For your convenience, Local 483 will supply the envelopes, stamps and mail your letter for you to your respective MP.

Please take the time to sign a letter.

Local 483 & Labour Day Weekend

Once again Local 483 was active and involved in making Labour Day activities in Cardinal a success.

The Union started the weekend festivities off on Friday evening as we held our fifth Local 483 Get-together and Dance at the Royal Canadian Legion.

Local 483 again called on the Branch 105 Ladies Auxiliary to provide the food, while more than 50 door prizes were drawn at the get-together party.

The dance featured the live entertainment of "Reg Carkner and the Terrence Christopher Band" it was open to the public, free admission.

On Sunday, Local 483 entered a float in the annual Parade and took first place for best float. Chocolate bars, candy and gum were thrown throughout the parade route.

Following the Parade, Local 483 again hosted the Annual Children's and Adult Races at the Legion. A large crowd gathered and participated.

Each participant received a complimentary hotdog and drink ticket from Local 483. These tickets were redeemed at the Cardinal Figure Skating Club's Canteen located at the Legion grounds.

Cash prizes and ribbons were given to the top three finishers.

On Monday, Local 483 provided and helped with organizing the Soap Box Derby. Local 483 has three soap box derby cars and allows kid’s that want to ride but don’t own a car the opportunity to participate in the races. Troy Tousignant finished 1st running in the Millwright Shop car and Matt Dishaw took 3rd place with the Machine Shop car.

Union Float takes 1st Prize

Local 483 went with the Community Festival’s Labour Day theme “Support Your Local Farmers” when they constructed the annual float.

Built was a giant cob of corn going through an antique kitchen counter hand grinder. Out of the grinder appeared to be dried starch going into an old and overflowing wooden barrel.

On the sides of the float read “grinding corn and servicing our members, since 1943”, and across the back of the float it read “the raw product comes from our local farmers – thank you!”

The Union float, with kid’s on board, took first place as the parade’s best float in the family and nonprofit category.

The float is also registered and will be in the Spencerville Fair Parade on Saturday September 9, 2006.

Please thank all members and volunteers who helped make the Local 483 events a success. Without the help of our Local and other organizations, Labour Day in Cardinal would not exist.

At last months membership meeting as well as June’s newsletter the Union Executive and Stewards Council were offering membership
the opportunity to put their name forward for the position of Safety Committee member.

CAW Embarks on New Political Direction

PORT ELGIN, ON.
On April 24, 2006 and after a spirited debate, an overwhelming majority of delegates to CAW Council voted in favour of encouraging CAW members, locals and staff to
withdraw all support and affiliations to the New Democratic Party.
After hearing from speaker after speaker, more than 800 workplace leaders from across Canada voted in favour of a resolution that outlines a new political direction for the 260,000 member CAW.
"We will move ahead and we will have a stronger position in terms of progressive politics down the road," CAW president Buzz Hargrove said after the vote.
The resolution encourages CAW local leadership, staff, members and CAW local unions that remain affiliated to the NDP to withdraw all support and affiliations to the
NDP federally, provincially and in the territories.
Delegates also expressed outrage at the decision by the Ontario NDP executive and council to suspend CAW national president Buzz Hargrove from the provincial and
federal NDP. They slammed federal, provincial and territorial NDP leaders for not objecting to the "scurrilous targeting of the Ontario NDP."
The resolution urges NDP leaders to demand the ONDP rescind its decision and amend NDP constitutions to respect that labour leaders and others will act according
to the democratic decisions made by their unions or organizations.
CAW Council reaffirmed the union's long-run strategy to engage in politics independently and called for the doubling of efforts in support of social movement partners.
Delegates committed to work hard to limit the regressive actions of the Harper government and prevent it from winning a majority in the next election.
"The CAW remains committed to strengthening working class politics and we will expand our financial support and efforts to work with other like-minded groups in our
common goal of building a progressive alternative in our country," said Hargrove.

The resolution approved by CAW Council on April 24th was adopted by the CAW National Executive Board on March 21 and has since been debated by hundreds of
CAW leadership and activists in meeting after meeting. CAW Council meets three times annually and acts as the Parliament of the union.

CAW Delegates Vote in Favour of Federal Election Strategy

Hundreds of delegates from CAW workplaces from coast to coast have voted overwhelmingly December 3rd in favour of a recommendation to elect as many New Democrats as possible and to vote to defeat Conservatives wherever possible in the coming election.

Delegates voted at the December 3rd CAW Council meeting, after a lengthy and impassioned debate with speaker after speaker outlining the importance of the upcoming election to working people. Some delegates outlined their support for only the NDP, while others stressed that the recommendation debated at council is a realistic strategy intended to give the NDP the best chance to have an impact in the next Parliament.

CAW president Buzz Hargrove said it is key for the NDP to hold the balance of power.

"I want to say, as strongly as I can, that my recommendation this weekend to the delegates is that we do whatever we can to elect as many New Democrats and to ensure that we have a Liberal minority government and that we do everything in our power to ensure that Stephen Harper forms neither a minority Conservative government, or worse yet, a majority Conservative government," Hargrove said. "We owe that to the members of our union."

The recommendation reads, in part:
"The best possible outcome of this federal election is another Liberal minority government, with the NDP holding a balance of power. The worst outcome is a Conservative victory (minority or majority). I recommend that the CAW work toward ensuring a Liberal minority with an NDP balance of power, and stopping a Conservative victory."

"I recommend that the CAW endorse the sitting NDP Members of Parliament, and individual NDP candidates in potentially winnable ridings (to be determined following consultation with our local leaders and activists). The list of endorsed candidates would be posted on the CAW web site and distributed to all locals."

"I recommend that in other ridings, the CAW not endorse any specific candidates; rather, individual voters will need to decide what best contributes to electing a Liberal minority with NDP balance of power, and stopping the Conservatives."

CAW Council is the parliament of the Canadian Auto Workers union. More than 900 delegates and guests representing CAW workplaces from coast to coast attended the most recent CAW Council meeting in Toronto. The CAW represents 260,000 members.

Hargrove's entire election strategy recommendation can be found on the CAW web site.

Local 483 & Labour Day Weekend

Once again Local 483 was active and involved in making Labour Day activities in Cardinal a success.
The Union started the weekend festivities off on Friday evening as we held our fourth Local 483 Get-together and Dance at the Royal Canadian Legion.
Local 483 again called on the
Branch 105 Ladies Auxiliary to provide the food, while more than 45 door prizes were drawn at the get-together party.
The dance featured the live entertainment of "Reg Carkner and the Terrence Chistopher Band" it was open to the public, free admission.
On Sunday, Local 483 entered a float in the annual Parade and took first place for best float. Chocolate bars, candy and gum were thrown throughout the parade route.
Following the Parade, Local 483 again hosted the Annual Children's and Adult Races at the Legion. A huge crowd gathered and participated. The lack of room on the starting line forced some races to be run in two heats, before the feature race found a winner.
Each participant received a complimentary hotdog and drink ticket from Local 483. These tickets were redeemed at the Cardinal Figure Skating Club's Canteen located at the Legion grounds.
Cash prizes and ribbons were given to the top three finishers.
Union Float takes 1st Prize
Local 483 went with the Community Festival’s Labour Day theme “Wheeling Through the Year’s” when they constructed the annual float, they also expanded the Union’s parade entry by including many other wheeling entries as well.
The block long Union procession was lead off with a carried banner, along with the CAW and Canadian flags, cars then followed from every era starting from the 1960’s to the 2000’s. There were large and small four-wheeler’s, Harley Davidson motorcycles, bicycles, scooters, kid’s motorized vehicles and more.
The Union float, a vintage giant red convertible, took first place as the parade’s best float.

Please thank all members and volunteers who helped make the Local 483 events a success. Without the help of our Local and other organizations, Labour Day in Cardinal would not exist.

Wal-Mart
"Day of Protest" - May 7, 2005

The Canadian Labour Congress has declared May 7 a day of protest outside Wal-Mart stores across Canada – a day when workers, community groups and students will raise awareness about the company’s anti-worker business approach.
The campaign will highlight Freedom of Association issues and the right to bargain collectively in Canada. It will also tackle anti-worker and anti-Canadian values and attitudes, the CLC says.
Wal-Mart announced the closure of its store in Jonquiere, Quebec, a move that comes after its employees at the store decided to form a union. The company has also attempted  several maneuvers in court to deny its Weyburn, Saskatchewan employees the right to belong to a union. But the Supreme Court of Canada will not hear Wal-Mart’s challenges of the power of the provincial labour board and the right of workers to the protection of the Canadian Charter of  Rights and Freedoms when they want to form a union.
Hundreds of delegates to CAW Council recently voted in favour of a recommendation from CAW president Buzz Hargrove  calling for the council’s endorsement and support of the CLC’s  May 7 Wal-Mart campaign.

Tsunami
: Disaster and Relief Aid, from Local 483 members
SUMMARY:

On Wednesday morning January 5th Local 483 began a campaign to raise money a
s South Asian nations struggled to deal with the devastating impact of the recent Tsunami.

The CAW National Union, the Social Justice Fund and CAW Council made an initial donation over the holidays of $150,000 to the Canadian Red Cross to help provide food, emergency medical supplies, water, temporary shelter, etc.

On January 3rd the Canadian government agreed to match individual donations dollar for dollar until Tuesday, January 11, 2005.

As a result CAW president Buzz Hargrove urged all Local's to collect from their members and added that the CAW would also match individual members donations dollar for dollar as well. Thereby making each dollar raised by an individual member, worth three dollars ($1 from the member, $1 matching from the government and $1 matching from the National Executive Board).

With short notice, and the CAW matching member's donations dollar for dollar up until Friday Jan. 7th at 5pm. Local 483 members had only two and a half days to collect donations. The Executive began preparations, set high expectations for the membership and started the campaign.

With approximately 165 members, the Executive was counting on a final contribution amount of $1,700.00. (an average of $10.00 per person). Which would in total amount to $5,100.00 when matched by the government and the CAW.

As a result and in less than 60 hours, the Union submitted $1,705.00 to the CAW on Friday January 7th at 4:58pm. It was sent from "The Individual Members of Local 483" for "The South Asia Disaster Fund".

In the end Local 483 members donated $1,800.00. CASCO also matched it's employees donations which made the final amount $7,105.00.

The members who gave and gave generously are deeply thanked for their financial support. This donation represents Local 483 and the continued good things that the members do for their community and others. This generosity will be remembered by many and those people will continue to believe that Local 483 a good Union with proud members.

Congratulations.

CAW Local Unions Urged To Donate To Tsunami Relief

January 04, 2005, 11:39 a.m. EST
As South Asian nations struggle to deal with the devastating impact of the recent Tsunami, CAW local unions are strongly urged to make donations as soon as possible to relief efforts.

The CAW national union, the Social Justice Fund and CAW Council made an initial donation over the holidays of $150,000 to the Canadian Red Cross to help provide food, emergency medial supplies, water, temporary shelter, etc.

Now, CAW local unions are asked to make two kinds of donations to Tsunami relief efforts. The first is a local union fund donation through local union executive board action, while the second consists of a local union donation collected from individual members – through plant gate collections, workplace collections, accepting individual donations and other ways in which members contribute in an organized fashion.

The Canadian government has agreed to match individual donations dollar for dollar until Tuesday, January 11, 2005. CAW president Buzz Hargrove, in a January 3 letter to local union presidents, said as a result local unions are asked to keep their local union fund donation through executive board action separate from individual member donations collected in the workplace. With the government only matching individual donations, the separate accounting will let the CAW inform the government of how much they need to match.

In addition, the CAW National Executive Board has agreed to match each dollar that is contributed either by local union funds donated by local union executive board action, or by individual member donations through workplace collections.

Each dollar raised by individual member donations through workplace collections is worth three dollars ($1 from the member, $1 matching from the government and $1 matching from the NEB).

For local union executive board donations from local union funds each dollar will generate two dollars ($1 from the local and $1 from the NEB).

Hargrove also calls on national service representatives and all bargaining committees to ask employers to match, dollar for dollar, the workplace collections from CAW members at their particular workplace. He urges locals, which are establishing next year’s budget, to set aside funds to help with rebuilding efforts over the next 12 months.

“In conclusion I am urging all local union elected officers, shop committees, shop stewards, local union activists and standing committees to put maximum effort into ensuring we raise every dollar possible to assist the people so tragically impacted by this incredible natural disaster,” Hargrove said.

With the time limits imposed by the Canadian government on matching funds, locals are asked to notify the CAW national secretary-treasurer Jim O’Neil of the amount of money raised from workplace collections and individual donations by 5 p.m. Friday, January 7. Please notify Jim O’Neil at the national office by fax (416) 495-3787 or e-mail cawtreas@caw.ca

Local unions should send cheques for the full amount committed, payable to” “CAW-Canada” and earmarked “South Asia Disaster Fund.” Cheques should be sent as quickly as possible to the national secretary-treasurer’s office, 205 Placer Court, Toronto, Ontario, M2H 3H9.

Unions around the world are pitching in - the LabourStart web site has created a special web page featuring ongoing coverage of the disaster and the international trade union response. Click below to go to the LabourStart page.

Employment pension plans are among the most reliable sources of retirement income, so it is important to know your plan when assessing your overall retirement savings strategy. In Ontario, employment pension plan information should be easy for members to obtain.
The Pension Benefits Act (PBA) establishes minimum standards for administering the funding pension plans and benefits, and these standards apply to every registered plan in Ontario. To ensure that pension plans comply with the minimum standard, the Financial Services Commission of Ontario (FSCO) regulates all Ontario-registered plans.

·
Advice on your pension payment options within 60 days before your retirement.
·
A retirement statement within 30 days following your retirement
·
A termination statement, within 30 days of your termination date.
·
Survivor benefit statement, within 30 days of notice of death.

Documents on Request - A member, the spouse or same sex partner of a member, a trade union, or any other person making contributions, or with entitlements under the plan, including a trade union or employer, may request certain documents held by the administrator. These include:
·
Annual information returns
·
Financial statements
·
Actuarial funding reports
·
Plan texts
·
Plan amendments
·
Correspondence with FSCO that is less that 5 years old (with all personal information removed).

Documents, according to the law, must be made available for inspection at least once in a calendar year, either at the member's place of employment or at a mutually agreed place.

Pension plan documents filed with FSCO may also be inspected by members (and copied for a fee) at FSCO's offices, by appointment. More information is available online at www.fsco.gov.on.ca. A Special Membership meeting of the United Food Processors’ Union, CAW Local 483 membership was held today (Friday) at 12 o’clock noon at the Sacred Heart Parish Centre in Cardinal.
Membership was informed of the tentative agreement that was reached on May 20, 2004 at 9:30am. between the Union’s Bargaining Committee and Casco, and voted after the meeting to decide if a new collective agreement had been reached?
Membership, 152 out of 160 Local 483 members that were in attendance, ratified the new agreement voting to accept the Bargaining Committee’s recommendation to approve the deal at 97%. The Union notified the Company of the result after the meeting, and later workers were being called back to work for Saturday.
Local 483 had been on strike since Friday May 14th at 12 o’clock noon, taking the strike to nearly 6 full days.
After another all night bargaining session and a tentative agreement in place on Thursday morning, the Union immediately pulled the picket line so trucks could freely come and go.
The Bargaining Committee said they were able to fix the problems that were important to the membership.
The number one item was time away from work (employees were working consecutive days on end), two solutions were agreed to which addressed the problem. First a restructuring of the collective agreement so that shift employees can only hold one job and the Company agreed to hire 12 people over the next 6 months.
A number of Job Security issues were solidified, new improvements on contractor language and improvements for employees when bidding to new jobs.
There were improvements to existing fringe benefits, and new benefits were included that the Union never had, such as Major Dental, Orthotics and Chiropractic.
The Union settled for a 2.7 and 2.74% compounded increase in wages over two years, but stated from the beginning that this was a non-monetary set of negotiations.
The Union is grateful for the support that was received from businesses and the people in Cardinal. Even businesses in surrounding towns such as Iroquois and Prescott sent food and supplies to the picket line. Other area Local Union’s were quick to call or visit and give support as well.
Local 483 had planned, and will still follow through with a free Bar-B-Que at 12 o’clock noon on Victoria Day Monday at the Cardinal Legion. There are fliers up all over town and the Union is inviting all retired members and the entire village of Cardinal to come by, so that the Union’s gratitude can be shown.

SPECIAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING HELD
Striking CAW Local 483 members gathered at the Sacred Heart Parish Hall in Cardinal on Sunday May 16, 2004 to listen to the Union’s Bargaining Committee outline how negotiations fell apart and the reason that strike action could not be avoided.

Approximately 130 members attended the meeting. They vowed to stay united until the Company agreed to address the Union’s problems. The Union said that time off the job has been a major issue for the past few years.

The Union stated that the Company put the Union’s Bargaining Committee in an unfair position by forwarding a final offer that was only good if the Bargaining Unit would unanimously endorse it. The Bargaining Unit said they would not be able to do that, therefore there is no offer from the Company to it’s employees.

Approximately 600 employees of Hershey Canada Inc. remain on strike after walking off their jobs on February 5, 2004 at 12:01 a.m. The major stumbling block remains to be improved benefits in the pension plan.
Our own Harry Ghadban, who is also National Representative for Local 462, continues to work very hard on behalf of the members of Local 462 to get a new collective agreement.
Local 462 members were pleased and welcomed the moral and financial support that was given.
